THE FIRST COMPLETE TRACHEA TRANSPLANT
On January 13, 2021, for the first time in the world, a complete trachea transplant was performed at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City on a patient whose organ was damaged six years ago after a series of intubations. The patient at the time, a 56-year-old woman, is currently in good health.

The trachea, the ‘tube’ that connects the larynx to the lungs, has always been considered very difficult to transplant because of the complexity of the blood vessels that run through it. The procedure lasted 18 hours and required more than 50 specialists: the trachea was taken from the donor and reconstructed in the recipient, and the various small blood vessels carrying oxygen to the organ were connected, while using a portion of the esophagus and thyroid to supply blood to the tissue being reconstructed.

“For the first time, we can offer a treatment option to patients with severe tracheal defects,” says Prof. Eric M. Genden, who led the team -. This is especially timely given the increasing number of patients with tracheal problems due to intubation for Covid. Our transplantation and revascularization protocol is reliable, reproducible and technically advanced.”
